How To Make Excerpt Pages For Novels or A Page Within A Page In WordPress

Hi everyone,

I thought I’d share the method I found of creating excerpt pages for my novels. Now, I am new to WordPress, so I’m probably doing everything the long way, but since this is what worked for me, it might just work for you, too. I wanted an excerpt page that didn’t show up in the Menu Bar.

Step 1:

Go to your Dashboard and hover your mouse over the Pages link on the left hand side of the screen.

Step 2:

Click on the Add New link that pops up.

Step 3:

First you need to give the page a name that will mean something. For example, if your book is called The Wanderer, you’d want the title to read: The Wanderer Excerpt or The Wanderer Details. Later on you will see why this is important. Secondly, you need to click on Save Draft.

Step 4:

Copy the entire link beside the Permalink. Paste this link in Notepad. Keep this page open.

Step 5:

Go back to the page and click the Publish button on the far right hand side of the screen

Step 6:

Hover your mouse over Pages on the left hand side and click on All Pages.

Step 7:

You will see a list of all the pages that appear in your navigation/menu bar. Hover your mouse over the page you just created and click on Quick Edit.

Step 8:

You need to delete the title.

Step 9:

After you have deleted the title, click Update on the far right hand side.

Step 10:

You will be shown a list of your pages. Your excerpt page will appear as ‘no title’. Click on ‘no title’ to open this page.

Step 11:

Make sure you don’t fill in the title. If you didn’t copy the link, this is another chance to do so. You give the page a name that means something, because the page essentially has no title, and later on when you want to edit the page, being specific will make your page easier to find.

Step 12:

Go to the Page and position where you want your excerpt button or link to appear. Put in a Text Widget or just open up the Page. Under the Text tab, paste in the code for your button. You might get the code from your theme’s website or browse the internet for more. Once you have pasted in the code for READ AN EXCERPT, highlight the code and then click on the link in the paragraph options. In the URL box that shows up, paste in the URL that you copied into Notepad (the one that leads to your excerpt page). Centre the code in the Visual tab. Then don’t forget to Update and Save everything.

Step 13:

And you’re done! If you want to edit the page, you can do so through Pages, or click on the READ AN EXCERPT button and find the ‘edit’ link at the bottom of the page.
